6 Landscaping Tips to Boost Curb Appeal

6 Things You Can Do To Make People Fall In Love With Your Home!

You’ve heard it before:  You only have one chance to make a great first impression! This is especially important when selling your home.  Put yourself in the mind of a potential buyer: How will they feel the first time they pull up to your home?  Does it scream “Buy me!” or “Drive on by?”  The appearance of your landscaping should not be overlooked when placing that “For Sale” sign in your yard.  A well-kept lot with neat landscaping goes a long way with buyers. It shows that you care about the property and have taken good care of it.  Here are a few tips to help keep your yard looking its best without breaking the bank…

1. Keep it neat!

Mow, trim, and cut should be your three buzzwords here.  A little bit of yard maintenance goes a long way.  If you can’t handle the maintenance yourself, consider hiring a landscaping company to avoid the perils of a scraggly and overgrown yard.  On the same note, be sure that bikes, toys, trash cans, garden tools, etc. are all stashed out of sight.

2. Plant native plants.

Add some new life to your yard with native plants.  They’re aesthetically pleasing, practical, and ecologically valuable for landscaping.  Native plants are the hardiest plants.  Learn more about plants native to the Knoxville area at: http://www.se-eppc.org/pubs/east.pdf

3. Define borders and add mulch.

Clean edges trick the eye into thinking that the entire landscape is neat and well-kept.  Outlining the border of a garden bed with spray chalk, followed by the use of a mattock or pulaski to chip away any encroaching lawn will help create a well-defined area.  Afterward, add a layer of mulch to refine the look!  It will help keep the weeds at bay while your home is on the market, AND will even out the overall landscaping look.

4. Get rid of the dead weight.

This goes along with number our first point but deserves its own mention.  Be absolutely sure to remove all dead or dying shrubs and perennials.  If there was any sign of disease or infestation in your landscaping, dispose of these items in black trash bags; DO NOT compost them with other yard waste.

5. Inspect sprinklers and irrigation.

You can have the most beautiful yard on the block, but if it’s not watered correctly then what’s the point? Be sure your sprinkler system and timers are working. It’s the least you can do for your landscaping!  This inspection should be one you perform each spring/summer.

6. Light it up!

Remember, buyers might do a drive-by in the evening.  Consider adding some landscape lighting to boost curb appeal and add value to your home.  Solar pathway lighting and accent lighting that highlights landscaping features are both relatively simple ways to step it up in the yard department.

Thank you for the tips. I will have to get on it right away. I have some dead plants that were really sick last year. I don’t need them to make my other plants sick. I am going to remove those old ones when I get home from work. Do I need to take away any of the soil? Maybe I will be just to be safe.

Doing the landscaping job on your home can really help especially if you are trying to sell your home. It can really help and make your home look nicer as well. I like that you mention to keep in neat and to plant native plants. The whole point of your landscaping is to make the place look neat and picked up. I think adding the plants just adds to that and makes it easier for them to grow when they are picked up.

I think the most overlooked aspect of landscaping is the incorporation of native plants. While the concept is definitely growing in popularity people tend to be more biased to simply choose plants from an aesthetic standpoint without considering their local environment. Then you get into the attraction of local bees and birds for example, which is a wonderful way to organize and design our landscape. Great article!

Landscaping is important. I know that your house needs curb appeal to stay relevant. I didn’t know that the lighting was so important to your curb appeal.

I think a lot of people underestimate the importance of a good yard. I think that keeping a neat yard not only boosts your home value, but also, your neighbors will really appreciate it. I like your tip about getting rid of dead weight. I’ve been thinking about hiring a landscaping company to do that for me, because I really just don’t have the time, you know?

We have been trying to improve our yard for years, and are ready to get to work. It’s interesting that planting native plants actually helps a lot with curb appeal. It would be nice to have plants that can survive the climate and look pretty.

I have noticed how hard it has been for me to keep my yard green this summer. I think my drip system might not be working. I have gone out in my yard a few times and tried to figure it out. I am hopeless with those kinds of things. I need to have my landscaper come out and see if she can make it work for me.

I couldn’t agree more. It is amazing how curb appeal can immediately affect the value of a property. This is the first thing buyers look when looking to buy a home. First impressions are key. Thanks for the great post.

When I moved into my house it had a lot of plants that take a lot of water. I live in the desert and want to make sure I do not use to much water. It would be great to get some local or native plants. Maybe my landscaper will know some good plants I can get for my yard. I would love to be more ecologically responsible.

I really appreciate the idea of making well defined lines to create a clean look to your yard. I feel like my yard always looks overgrown or messy even when I just had it trimmed. I think I should get a landscaper out here to build a little wall around my garden and help separate the grass and other plants.

Thank you for sharing. I would love to get rid of some of the dead weight in my yard. I have these large dead bushes in my yard. It would be nice to get rid of them and replace them with something lighter looking. I’ll have to make some calls and get a landscaper.

It is so true, as I tell all of my clients – a little TLC goes a long way. The design itself can be rather simple, and even outdated, as long as it is clean, neat, and orderly. If the homeowner looks like they care about their property, other people will also. It also helps keep the property value up (also for the neighbors).

That’s a good tip to define borders. You can control how people view your property by the shapes you use. Design is all about controlling how people see things.

My wife and I are going to sell our house so we were wondering what landscaping we could do to help our house sell for the price that it is worth. I agree that dead bushes show signs of infestation so I will make sure to remove all dead plants that I have. I also think that it would be a good idea to hire a landscaper to have them plant some new flowers and plants. That way the house will look better and sell easier.

I love your suggestion of planting native plants. These plants are already proven to succeed in your area and so it only makes sense to plant more of them. We will certainly keep this in mind as we decide which tree we would like planted in our front yard. I am beginning to think that a Bradford Pear tree would do perfectly since it’s native and aesthetically pleasing.

I like your tip of gravel beds and mulch for landscaping a garden. Concrete driveways is another option as it is one of the best driveways that reduces the chances of weeds and plants to grow. But, I think garden beds really add a classy look in gardens and patios and are affordable.

I love doing my own garden and I must say that I kinda renovate it like annually because it’s really fun. I’ve read your tips and I like the idea of putting native plants, I’m usually just putting mixes of different types of stones and never really tried native plants. Maybe next time I’ll try those. Thanks!

I recently moved into a new house and I would love for this new house to have more curb appeal, but I don’t know how to get that curb appeal. I didn’t think about defining borders by using mulch. It would be nice to have some areas defined by something! Thank you for all the tips!

I liked that you had mentioned that it could be helpful to define borders around all of the yards and create a great outline of everything to increase the look. My wife and I are currently trying to sell our home and we haven’t had much luck and we think we just aren’t catching enough attention. We’ll have to look into bordering and everything, but we might just need to hire a professional that can help with landscaping to take care of this better as I’m sure they’ll have a better attention to detail than either of us.

I did like it when you suggested getting rid of the dead shrubs and plants and that those with signs of infection or disease should not be composted. That is apparently, the only thing that I understand and think I can do in the list of things that you gave. That is the reason why it would be best if I hired a landscaping company to do the yard work for me. Thanks!

I love your tip to remove all dead or dying shrubs and perennials. My parents want to add a little curb appeal to their home this summer, but they’re not exactly sure how. In fact, they don’t have any kinds of shrubs or flowers in their yard as it is. It would be really helpful for them to hire a landscaper to come and consult with them and turn their yard into something really beautiful.

I found it very helpful to learn that adding mulch to your yard can help keep weeds out of your soil! My wife is an avid gardener, and one of the things that she doesn’t like dealing with is the weeds that sprout around her plants. I will be sure to recommend to her that we invest in mulch around our garden to keep the unwanted weeds out!
